Hate having your picture taken because you think you always look hideous? Being photogenic comes natural to some, but there are things you can do to look better in photos. Here are a few simple tips to help you stop running for cover when the cameras come out. You can learn these techniques and once learned, they will be second nature. Practice, really it helps! You will see a difference and everyone will say... you are SOOOO photogenic!
1. Start with the right clothes. Solids and neutrals work best. Patterns can overwhelm, busy outfits distract from YOU. Wear simple styles you are comfortable in.
2. Don't tan for your shoot. The camera picks it up as RED and that is not flattering! No shiney make up... think matte! Simple smooth hair styles.
3. Determine your best side, yep.... everyone has one. Find it and try to position yourself in the shot to show it off. A good photographer will help you. Look into the lens and don't pull your chin back, rather lean into the camera.
4. Think about posture. Good posture = confidence which = photogenic.
5. Relax!!!! Many people look unnatural because they freeze with a "say cheese" type smile (please don't encourage your kids to say cheese for pics! It won't be their true natural smile!) When smiling try to think relax. If you get nervous... it will only make things worse. Take a deep breath, exhale and shake out your arms and shoulders as you move into a natural stance.
6. Think happy thoughts. Think of something, or someone, you love and imagine the camera is that someone. You are so happy to see them! Your eyes light up and you are smiling with your eyes! The trick is being able to bring all this out on demand. A good photographer will help you get there with jokes, teasing and being relaxed themselves.
7.Hire the best photographer you can afford. You do get what you pay for, but be aware high dollar photographers sometimes have high dollar egos. The shoot should be about YOU not them. Make sure you are comfortable with them and their style. A good photographer should put you at ease. They should know how to show you in your best light, best location and also have good editing skills to help you accentuate your positve features. Truely professional photographers see the beauty in all their clients and they want you to have a good time not an ordeal! Nothing makes me happier than to hear a client say... "WOW... that was fun" at the end of their session. Means I am doing my job well!!!
